Kohima: Nagaland Health Minister P. Paiwang Konyak is pushing the federal government to overhaul how it hands out cash for medical services. He brought these concerns to the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi this week. Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda chaired the meeting.

Konyak wants the National Health Mission to stop relying so heavily on population size when it divides up the budget. He argues the formula ignores the harsh reality of life in the hills. The minister told the council that officials must account for factors like difficult terrain, remote locations, and the high costs of moving supplies. He insists on region-specific funding to keep essential clinics running.

The state needs these changes to modernize facilities at every level. This work is urgent. The first class of doctors will graduate from the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in 2028, and they need a functioning system to work in. Konyak appealed for a change of heart, saying he hopes for a "favourable response from the Centre" in the spirit of cooperative federalism. He remains committed to fixing the state's healthcare system despite the high price of logistics in the region.
