Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio Seeks Central Support for Major Infrastructure Projects

Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio pressed the central government for increased investment in state infrastructure and development during the 11th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog in New Delhi. Addressing the summit, which focused on the theme of Human Capital for Viksit Bharat @ 2047, Rio requested funding for projects including the establishment of an IIT and an AIIMS in Nagaland.

The Chief Minister identified several critical priorities for the state, such as the construction of the Foothill Road, a greenfield airport at Ciethu, railway expansion, and the development of Nagaki City. He also sought fiscal assistance to resume oil and natural gas exploration and to support urban flyovers, inland waterways, and power infrastructure.

Rio highlighted the state's progress in governance reforms, noting the adoption of an SDG-linked budget architecture and an Outcome Budgeting Framework. He showcased a variety of social initiatives, ranging from the Innovation Seed Fund for female entrepreneurs to the introduction of Pink Scooty Taxis. Furthermore, he outlined efforts in youth development, such as the Chief Minister's STEM Incentive Programme and the Nagaland Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Mission.

Regarding the meeting's broader impact, Rio expressed optimism about the collaborative process. He said that the deliberations would further strengthen cooperative federalism and contribute towards building a stronger, more resilient and developed India.

The presentation also covered economic drivers like agriculture and tourism. Rio emphasized the need for better food processing facilities to support the cultivation of coffee and high-value crops like avocado, kiwi, and dragon fruit. He noted that the annual Hornbill Festival continues to serve as a vital platform for cultural preservation and economic growth for local artisans and small businesses.
