Kohima: The Time Travel to Nagaland 1979 exhibition remains open until September 25. High public interest forced the extension. The showcase features ethnographic work by Japanese photographer Yuzo Morita. It captures local traditions and daily life from nearly fifty years ago.
Organizers hosted a closing ceremony on September 19 at the Directorate of Art and Culture in Bayavu Hill, Kohima. Emi Okada, the project director and ethnomusicologist, noted that visitors frequently spotted familiar faces in the vintage prints. She emphasized the value of connecting younger generations with their history. The project originated as a joint effort between the Nagaland State Museum and Japan’s National Museum of Ethnology eighteen months ago.
Okada spoke on the importance of maintaining cultural practices through active participation rather than simple documentation. She stated, "while researchers could record, transcribe and document songs, the knowledge and social meanings embedded in singing could not be preserved through documentation alone, but were passed from person to person through the experience of singing together."
Morita shared a message hoping the images inspire residents to reflect on past changes and future peace. The team plans a larger exhibition in Japan in two years to highlight Naga life. Archaeologist Hitoshi Endo thanked the public for the project's success. Director Adela Moa delivered the final vote of thanks.
