Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a crowd in Navsari on September 8 to explain the origins of the PM SVANidhi scheme. He claimed the policy was born from his own background rather than bureaucratic planning. He said, "I don't have to use my brains for this. I have lived that life. I have known that life. I have seen that life."
Modi highlighted the daily struggles of vendors who relied on informal lenders. A vendor might borrow 1,000 rupees in the morning but receive only 900. After selling goods all day, they had to pay back the full 1,000 rupees. This cycle left them with almost nothing to eat. Debt crushed these small business owners.
The government stepped in to cut out the lenders. They now provide bank accounts and institutional credit without requiring guarantees. The system also promotes digital payments. Timely repayment unlocks larger loans for successful vendors. Many who started with 15,000 rupees have moved up to 30,000 or 50,000 rupees. Business stability has improved. Vendors now stock enough inventory for a full week instead of buying daily.
Modi compared the impact of these small interventions to the relief a laborer feels when handed water during a summer heatwave. He pushed BJP workers in Navsari to reach every eligible vendor in the district. He wants no stall owner left out.
