Kohima: MGM College students took to the stage in Dimapur on September 19 for a slam poetry competition. The Department of English hosted the event at the college auditorium under the theme Poetry in Motion – Voices That Inspire. The contest aimed to boost student confidence, creativity, and self-expression outside of standard classroom lectures.
Thejavor Jordan Mepfuo, a BA first-semester student, chaired the session. Ahikali I. Jakha, who heads the Department of English, provided the opening cadence. Principal Reji Abraham of MGM Higher Secondary School served as the guest of honour. He spoke on how literature sharpens critical thinking and imagination in young people. Abraham urged the students to use these platforms to articulate their "thoughts, experiences, aspirations, and perspectives."
The competition featured original poems tackling a wide range of modern concerns and viewpoints. Narion L. Khuvung claimed the first prize. Ethungbeni took second place, while Joimie Angpuh finished third. Christine Murry, an assistant professor in the English department, ended the day with a vote of thanks. She thanked the faculty, participants, and the guest of honour for making the event a success.
