Meriema Youth Group Drops Vehicle Ban After Highway Repair Pledge

Kohima: The Meriema Village Youth Organisation has called off a planned blockade on government vehicles. This move comes after officials and contractors promised to fix the crumbling National Highway-2 stretch near their village. The decision arrived following a tense meeting at the Kohima Deputy Commissioner office.

Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem mediated the talks between the youth group, the Public Works Department, and the firm M/s Nitin Sai Construction. The youth leaders had voiced complaints about incomplete drainage and neglected debris since March. They finally reached a breaking point this week. The group previously threatened to block all government-registered traffic starting July 1.

The PWD assured the group that a work order for the sinking road section would arrive by June 30. M/s Nitin Sai Construction promised to start moving equipment by July 2. Actual repairs on the site are slated to begin by July 6. The group confirmed their withdrawal via an official statement, noting they will "continue to monitor the progress of the works in close coordination with the district administration and the concerned department."

The district administration will now partner with the village youth to watch the contractor. Both sides hope this oversight prevents further delays. The pressure remains on the contractor to meet the new timeline.
