Meghalaya Plans Massive 1,000 Drum Festival for Wangala Golden Jubilee

Shillong: The Meghalaya government is scaling up the Wangala Festival this year to celebrate its golden jubilee. Plans include a massive 1,000 drum event. Organizers anticipate a crowd of more than one lakh people for the festivities.

Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered officials to inspect the venue. They must verify that the site handles the expected surge in visitors and traffic. "I will soon hold a joint inspection with officials to assess the venue’s capacity for the 1,000 Drums edition," Shira stated.

Teams are working on infrastructure upgrades. This includes widening approach roads to manage the flow of people. The government previously bought 70 hectares of land at Nongalgre for large events, but the site remains under development. Shira added that the state is also pushing to speed up Baljek Airport expansion projects to boost connectivity throughout the Garo Hills.
