Shillong: Meghalaya is prepping a massive celebration for the Golden Jubilee of the Wangala Festival. Organizers are swapping the traditional 100 Drums performance for a 1,000 Drums spectacle. It will be the biggest cultural event in Northeast history. The state expects more than one lakh visitors to pack the Garo Hills.
Officials are pushing hard to handle the crowds. Road connectivity projects are moving fast. Work at Baljek Airport is speeding up to bring in tourists. The government wants to cement the region as a top cultural destination while sparking new local business growth.
This harvest festival honors Misi Saljong, the Sun God. It features deep-rooted music and dance traditions. "The Golden Jubilee celebrations will not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Garo community but also reinforce Meghalaya's commitment to promoting tourism, preserving indigenous traditions, and creating new opportunities for local businesses and communities," government officials stated. The state aims to balance heritage preservation with economic development during this landmark year.
