Shillong: Zikku Balgra N Marak, president of the Garo Students Union Central Executive Committee, wants a holiday for workers across Meghalaya. He issued the appeal on November 6 in Tura. His target list includes central government departments, public sector units, banks, and private firms.
The Wangala Festival runs from November 11 to 14 at Chibragre. Meghalaya already designates this time as a local holiday to ensure families can attend the celebrations. Despite this, local workers often find their offices locked in work. Marak said, "The Government of Meghalaya declares Wangala as a State / Local holiday every year to allow the people to participate in the festivities with their families."
This keeps locals from honoring their most sacred thanksgiving event. Marak asked companies to close their doors or offer special, restricted, or compensatory leave to staff in Garo Hills and across the state. Respect the culture. Grant the time off.
