Minister Shylla Expects 2028 Completion for Mawkhanu Football Stadium

Shillong: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed the 732-crore Mawkhanu Football Stadium will open by late 2028. He inspected the site in Mawkhanu village, New Shillong, alongside project architects and engineers. Work remains on track.

The facility sits 30 km from Shillong and boasts a 40,000-seat capacity. Designers built the stadium to satisfy FIFA and AFC standards for international competition. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma previously laid the foundation stone for the massive government-funded project.

Plans include a natural-grass pitch and a football academy run by Northeast United FC. Athletes will also access a swimming pool, gymnasium, and courts for squash and tennis. Shylla also monitored progress at the facility's shooting range during his visit.

Shylla liked what he saw. "The ambitious infrastructure project will serve as a major hub for football and other sporting disciplines in the state," he stated after the review. The site will function as a primary destination for regional sports development.
