Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma honored 46 outstanding athletes on Tuesday in Shillong. He treated sports funding as a core investment for the state's youth. The event marked the latest installment of the Achiever of the Month programme. This initiative aims to recognize, motivate, and support high performers across diverse fields.
Sangma addressed the crowd regarding the government's shifting strategy. Years ago, sports associations ran on pure passion without financial backing. Now, the government streamlines the Sports department through higher budgetary allocations. Officials are building infrastructure statewide while directly supporting coaches and individual competitors. Sangma claimed the state's sports policy acts as a concrete vision for future success. He told the attendees, "Every programme we have, every single penny we spend is not an expenditure but an investment in the future of our state that is our youths."
Sanfida Nongrum took home the top honor as the Achiever of the Month in Sports. She earned the title for her contributions to Indian football this year. The CM held a follow-up session with athletes and representatives to field questions. Topics included travel support for international tournaments and specific incentives for medal winners. Sangma urged the group to view sports as a lifelong commitment rather than a temporary finish line.
