Shillong: Meghalaya is betting big on grassroots football. The state provides Rs 8,000 to local players participating in block-level leagues. It is a bold move to keep kids off the streets. Minerva Academy FC founder Ranjit Bajaj says these programs stop youth from drifting into drugs, crime, and militancy.
Bajaj claims these government initiatives turn idle time into productive careers. He pushes for similar funding for local artists to broaden the scope of youth development. Investment works. He points to the efficiency of the Conrad K Sangma administration in bypassing red tape to get money to those who need it most.
"Give them something to do and give them an opportunity," Bajaj said. He believes the reach is what matters most. By moving away from central hubs and elite academies, the state finds talent in forgotten communities. This strategy prepares the region for the 2027 National Games. A wider talent pool is forming. If the state keeps spending, it builds a stronger future for its athletes.
