Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is searching for ways to provide financial support to the families of five workers who died in a July 10 well accident at Lapalang. Current Disaster Management guidelines offer no ex gratia payments for such incidents. The state will weigh the families' economic hardship against these regulatory gaps.
The tragedy occurred under the jurisdiction of Rynjah Police Station. A generator used to pump water from a private construction site well filled the space with toxic fumes. Five people died from asphyxiation, including two rescuers. One worker escaped. "They are all from a very, very economically weak section of society. Therefore, we are looking at ways in which we can give some support," Sangma stated.
Pressure for state aid remains high. The Nongthymmai Block Executive Committee of the National People's Party and other party units sent formal memoranda requesting relief. Rito Sing Syiem, president of the Nongthymmai NPP unit, noted these deaths were likely preventable with proper protective gear and gas testing. Pynthorumkhrah MLA A.L. Hek also met the families to pledge his support for their cause.
Authorities are moving toward prosecution. East Khasi Hills district administration booked the site owner and the contractor for alleged negligence. Sangma promised consequences for those who bypassed safety laws. "The law will take its course against those who ignored prohibitions and safety regulations," he said.
