Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wants the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences to gain Institute of National Importance status. He met with Union Health Minister JP Nadda to press the issue. This push has been years in the making. Nadda heard the request during their recent meeting. The minister responded positively to the proposal.
The two leaders also talked about how the institute handles hiring. Sangma said, "Nadda highlighted the need to develop mechanisms ensuring that the majority of positions at the institute are filled by local youths from the state." Both officials agree that staffing priorities must change. This move aims to keep jobs for the regional workforce. The state continues to chase this long-term goal.
