Shillong: Meghalaya plans to operate 700 health sub-centers by March 2027. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the state health infrastructure rollout this week. The state completed 110 centers over the last two years. Construction continues on another 200 sites. This work addresses the needs of people in remote areas. Residents often travel long distances for care.
Construction nears completion at Bajengdoba, Byrnihat, Mahendraganj, Raksamgre, and Mylliem Umthlong. These facilities should go live by January 2027. Officials also plan to activate a 100-bed hospital in Resubelpara. These projects will add 600 beds to the current 7,000-bed capacity. The state spent Rs 750 crore on health infrastructure in five years.
Official reports track clear gains. Infant deaths dropped from 3,064 in 2020-21 to 1,833 in 2025-26. Maternal deaths fell by 57 percent during that same window. Data shows institutional births hit 79 percent, while household health insurance coverage reached 74.9 percent. The government credits these investments for the shift.
The administration remains focused on public health. The state government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the public healthcare system and ensuring that people have better access to quality medical services.
