Shillong: Meghalaya will hold its five-day Autumn Session from August 24 to 28. The Business Advisory Committee reached a unanimous decision on the schedule during a meeting held on July 31. Attendees included Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Opposition Leader Mukul M. Sangma, Opposition Chief Whip Charles Pyngrope, and Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma.
Speaker Thomas A. Sangma promises fair floor time. Legislators have raised concerns about the short duration. The schedule reserves three days for government business and two days for private members. The Speaker addressed these worries directly after the meeting. "I will try my best to accommodate all the members concerned and ensure that every member gets an opportunity to express their concerns on the floor of the House," he said.
The session starts August 24. Lawmakers will review the committee report, lay ordinances, and handle government bills. They will also present the Supplementary Demands for Grants and Supplementary Appropriation for 2026-27. Obituary references will open the proceedings.
August 25 and August 27 belong to private members. They will introduce bills, motions, and resolutions. Crucially, the House plans to take up a formal resolution opposing uranium mining on August 25. This move follows comments by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, which sparked local anxiety. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma insists the state remains opposed to mining, despite federal remarks.
Government business dominates August 26. Members will vote on Supplementary Demands for Grants. The final day includes the introduction and passage of the Meghalaya Appropriation (No. III) Bill, 2026, alongside other government bills. The session ends with adjournment sine die or prorogation.
