Kohima: The Medziphema Town Council is forcing a shift in how residents dump their trash. ADC and Executive Officer P James Swu issued an order requiring all households to compost biodegradable kitchen waste. This directive follows the Home Department Notification from May 18, 2026, and enforces the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2026.
Officials recognize that many properties lack the room for private pits. The council will build and maintain a central facility to process the waste. Residents can also build cluster-based arrangements in their neighborhoods. Ward sanitation committees will help organize these groups. The council expects full cooperation to keep the town clean. The order says: "All concerned residents have been directed to extend full cooperation for strict implementation."
Households have 30 days to fix their waste habits. The new rule is effective immediately. Dumping kitchen scraps into municipal garbage trucks will trigger penalties under the 2026 rules and other local laws.
