Kohima: The Nagaland Government is shifting its waste management strategy to Xukiye village in the Niuland district. Officials filed an affidavit with the National Green Tribunal on August 5, proposing a 50-acre Integrated Zonal Waste Processing Centre. This move scraps plans for a site at Dobagaon, where 10.74 acres acquired in May 2026 proved unusable.
Public opposition killed the Dobagaon project. Villagers cited departmental misinformation during land negotiations and environmental risks. The report admitted the site failed to meet Solid Waste Management Rules due to severe erosion from the Dhansiri River. Officials faced "fierce opposition and non-cooperation" from local residents throughout the process.
The new Xukiye facility will serve Dimapur, East Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland. It will also cover rural local bodies in the surrounding districts. The government expects the site to be operational within eight months. The acquisition process started on July 27, 2026.
Work at the existing Sunrise Colony dumpsite shows mixed progress. Crews finished a green belt in May 2024 and linear drainage in July 2026. Fencing was finalized in June 2026, and six CCTV cameras went live in August 2025. Bio-mining is 80 percent complete, while bio-remediation continues at 60 to 100 metric tonnes daily. A 150 KLD Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant at Shozukhu is 70 percent finished.
Missing infrastructure remains a sticking point. The site still lacks a weighbridge, a concrete processing slab, and an Effluent Treatment Plant. The NGT Eastern Zone Bench noted on August 7 that authorities failed to meet its February 3, 2023, directives. The Tribunal expressed "strong displeasure" over the three-year delay. It warned officials that future failures could trigger heavy costs. The next hearing is set for October 14, 2026.
