Khonoma Debuts Community Waste Management System

Kohima: Khonoma villagers launched the Khonoma Community-Based Sustainable Waste Management System on August 8. The project aims to fix how the village handles trash. It focuses on better segregation, collection, and disposal processes.

Government officials, church leaders, and students gathered for the rollout. Pastor Vibilie Chase opened the event with an invocation. Kovi Meyase, commissioner and secretary to the government of Nagaland, spoke about the duty of residents. He said that "effective waste management is fundamental to protecting Khonoma's rich natural heritage while promoting cleaner and healthier living conditions."

Dr. Kezevituo Metha of NEPED outlined the long-term vision for the program. He wants to trigger real behavioral changes. The system operates under the Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya project. This project pulls funding from the German government through KfW. It runs as a partnership between the Nagaland Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and NEPED.

Sidramappa M. Chalkapure, the project director, praised the village for its green leadership. He believes this site serves as a vital model for all of Nagaland. The initiative covers 64 villages across the Peren, Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, and Tuensang districts. These areas prioritize eco-tourism, climate resilience, and habitat protection. Viriatsü Meyase, president of the KSU, chaired the launch event. Officials ended the day with an on-site demonstration of the new waste handling equipment.
