Shillong: Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang released 2.5 crore on Friday. He tapped into the 2025-26 Special Rural Works Programme to fund infrastructure, education, and welfare across his constituency. This is his third public distribution event. The money covers a wide range of local needs.
Schools took a significant portion of the pie. A local college landed 20 lakh, while 5 lakh went toward installing CCTV systems in various schools. Another 13 institutions received direct support for classroom expansion, general renovation, and buying equipment. Marbaniang noted the importance of these initiatives, stating, "This marks the third time the legislator has publicly distributed benefits under the scheme to local institutions and residents."
Housing and welfare efforts saw 37.5 lakh divided among 50 people. Each received 75,000 for low-cost home construction. Another 100 people got 25,000 each for basic house repairs. To help workers, the MLA gave 10,000 each to 750 individuals. This group included farmers, small shopkeepers, and daily-wage laborers.
The funds also reached local sports clubs. Various neighborhoods secured cash for community work. Crews will now handle road and footbridge repairs, street lighting, and the setup of public sound systems. Mawlai MDC Eddieson Kharrmuid, VPP vice president Dr. Kara Chen, and UDP vice president Dr. Kara Chen joined other party functionaries at the Friday event in Shillong.
