Shillong: A Bolero pick-up plowed into traffic Tuesday morning in Mawlai Iewrynghep after its brakes reportedly failed. The wreck happened near Meika Shop around 8:15 am. Three people were hurt. The driver, 45-year-old Barstone Shabong of Laitlyngkot, lost control of the vehicle while headed toward Mawlai Motsyiar.
His pick-up, registered ML06 8554, swerved into the oncoming lane. It smashed into two scooters and two four-wheelers. Mercy D. Sangma, 35, and her three-year-old child, Rikdora D. Sangma, were riding one of the scooters. They live at the 1st MLP Battalion. Another scooter rider, 25-year-old Gilbert Pakynteiñ of Mawiong, also took a hit in the collision.
Commuters rushed all three to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital. The crash also dinged a Hyundai Venue and one other private vehicle. Those drivers chose not to file formal complaints. Police have seized the Bolero and ordered a mechanical inspection to verify the driver's claims. Medical tests confirmed Shabong was not drunk during the incident.
Authorities have now taken action. Police stated that they "registered a suo motu FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act, with further investigation under way." Officers are currently piecing together the details of the crash.
