Imphal: Manipur officials cleared the calendar for soccer fans. The state government declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and universities on Monday, July 20, 2026. The move aims to let students catch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. Kickoff starts at 12:30 a.m. sharp.
The mandate covers every institution in the state. This includes schools affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM), the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). All other recognized boards must also close. The order applies to government, aided, and private sectors.
Ningthoujam Geoffrey, Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Government of Manipur, signed the order on behalf of the Governor. It spans the School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Adult Education, and SCERT departments. The formal directive stated, "With a view to enable students across the State to enjoy the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final at 0030 hours on 20th July, 2026, the Governor of Manipur is pleased to declare the closure of all schools as may be affiliated to the Board of Secondary Education, the Council of Higher Secondary Education, the Central Board of Secondary Education or otherwise; colleges and higher education institutes including universities; falling under government, aided or unaided sectors, on Monday, the 20th July, 2026."
The Education Department released the order on Sunday, July 19. Students get the day off.
