Imphal: Manipur officials and the Naga People’s Organisation banned the sale and use of firecrackers across several districts immediately. The move comes as Diwali approaches. Authorities hope to prevent public panic in hill districts where residents might mistake explosive noise for gunfire or active threats. Law and order remains volatile.
District Magistrates enforced the ban under Section 163(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, for three specific districts. Meanwhile, the Naga traditional civil body ordered a separate, total ban across the entire Senapati district. No temporary licenses for fireworks exist for this year’s festival. Possession or sale of pyrotechnics now violates the Explosives Act, 1884.
Police promised swift legal action against anyone ignoring the state order. Traditional leaders warned that locals who break the community ban face punishment under customary law. The Naga body issued a plea for public order, stating, "The civil body appealed to all residents, shopkeepers and local business establishments to extend full cooperation to maintain public peace and community welfare." Businesses must comply to keep the peace.
