Imphal: Heavy rain battered Manipur for two days, triggering multiple landslides that choked National Highway-37. The blockage halted traffic between Imphal and Silchar, leaving more than 500 vehicles stranded on Monday. Traffic remains at a standstill for the second day.
The worst damage occurred between Awangkhul Part-I and Awangkhul Part-II. Mud and debris buried the roadway. This route acts as a primary link through Noney and Tamenglong districts, carrying essential fuel and goods. The disruption strikes hard because the Imphal-Dimapur highway is currently closed by an indefinite blockade.
Crews from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, security agencies, and construction firm ABCI arrived to clear the route. They deployed excavators and dumper trucks to move the piles of dirt. Ongoing rain slows their progress. Officials are monitoring the hill slopes for fresh slides.
Authorities suspended security escorts on the highway. They warned transport operators to stay put until weather conditions improve and the road is safe. One official noted the difficulty of the situation, stating, "Efforts are being made to restore traffic at the earliest, but continuous rainfall has slowed the operation."
Rising water levels in local rivers have pushed past the danger mark. Many residents remain indoors to avoid the risk. Officials continue to watch vulnerable spots across the district as the monsoon threat persists.
