CRPF Nabs Extortionist Armed with Pistol on Manipur Highway

Imphal: A/66 CRPF troops grabbed an alleged extortionist on September 9 while he targeted transport vehicles along National Highway 37 in Noney district. The suspect stood near Chainage No. 111, close to Rengpang Market and Milestone No. 117, when security forces moved in. They made the arrest on the spot.

The team identified the man as 30-year-old Shimreingam Shimray from Mapum village in Ukhrul district. He is the son of the late Joshep Shimray. During the bust, officers pulled a .32-calibre pistol, a magazine, and six live rounds from his gear. They also seized Rs 33,300 in cash and one walkie-talkie set.

Authorities are currently running operations to stop threats against highway commuters. Investigators plan to "ascertain the extent of the accused’s involvement and whether he was linked to any wider extortion network." This work continues as officials tighten their grip on the vital transport route.
