Kohima: A catastrophic landslide tore through Defence Colony in Nagaland’s Mon district early Sunday. Torrential rain triggered the disaster, which buried over 10 homes, including reinforced concrete structures located below the Assam Rifles camp. Search teams have pulled three bodies from the mud: two men and one woman.
Authorities fear the toll will climb. At least seven people remain missing, including a child. Rescue personnel from the Nagaland Police, Army, Assam Rifles, State Disaster Response Force, and local volunteers are scouring the site. Work is brutal. Continuous water flow and fresh mudslides are hampering the recovery effort.
Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, confirmed that heavy rain since early Sunday caused flash floods and blocked critical roads. The district administration has already evacuated families from the danger zones. They urge residents to stay away from riverbanks and unstable slopes.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio promised immediate ex-gratia assistance to victims. In a statement on X, he addressed the crisis: "Deeply distressing reports of heavy landslides in Mon. My heartfelt condolences to those who've lost loved ones. The State Govt. is closely monitoring the situation. NSDMA, Dist. Admin, DDMA, SDRF, Police, AR & local community are working on ground for search & rescue operations." Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton also pledged full support for the relief operations.
