Guwahati: Persistent monsoon rains triggered a massive landslide in the Sargapur area of Guwahati under the Baisistha district. Debris buried the bottom two floors of a three-storey building. The top floor now serves as a community hall, but structural damage puts all occupants at risk.
Families fled their homes. The ground is unstable. Residents worry a nearby electricity substation will collapse next if the rain keeps falling.
District officials opened a relief camp in the community hall. They are handing out bread, drinking water, and candles to displaced families. Locals remain on edge. "Residents have urged the Assam government to ensure timely relief, rehabilitation and long-term measures to safeguard vulnerable settlements from recurring landslide threats."
The threat is not over. Many fear the remaining houses will slide if the downpour continues. People in the area still lack reliable access to food and essential supplies.
