Land Dispute Triggers Confrontation Between BJP and Congress in Assam

Guwahati: Tensions boiled over in Abhayapuri on August 12. A land fight pitted the BJP against the Congress in Assam's Bongaigaon district. The trouble started when local BJP members began building a party office on a plot Congress claims has been theirs for decades.

The land covers 1 bigha 4 kathas at Shivpur, listed under Dag No. 80/175. Records from the Srijangram Revenue Circle show the plot was allotted for a Congress office back in 1992. The BJP ignored this history. They broke ground on the site.

Former MLA Pradip Kumar Sarkar led a Congress team to the plot. They ripped down the BJP banner and planted their own flag. Work stopped immediately. Congress leaders blamed outside actors for the mess. The party claimed, "attempts were being made by a section of land mafias to grab the disputed plot in the name of constructing a BJP office."

Police and Srijangram Revenue Circle officials descended on the scene to quiet the crowd. They are currently combing through land records to see who actually owns the dirt. Authorities have not yet confirmed the final status of the allotment.
