Kohima: The Konyak Students' Union has issued a warning regarding a profound educational crisis in Mon district. Their latest survey of 209 institutions, which serves nearly 20,000 students, revealed a critical shortage of teachers and failing school infrastructure that threatens the academic future of local youth.

Findings from the audit of 117 Government Primary Schools were particularly stark. Only one school in this group had an English teacher, three had Mathematics teachers, and just one had a Science teacher. Many of these institutions are severely understaffed, with some schools relying on a single teacher to manage all subjects.

The situation remains equally dire at higher levels. Dozens of Middle Schools are operating without instructors for core subjects like English, Science, and Mathematics. At the secondary and higher secondary levels, a lack of Graduate and Post Graduate teachers in fields such as Economics and Political Science prevents students from preparing effectively for competitive exams.

The union highlighted the case of GHSS Mon Town C, which has lacked any government-appointed Post Graduate teachers since its 2024 upgrade. The KSU has been forced to hire and pay local teachers directly to fill these gaps. Beyond staffing, the union noted that many facilities are dilapidated, lacking essential labs, libraries, and basic classroom space.

KSU leadership argues that these systemic failures place rural students at a severe disadvantage. They are calling on the government and the Department of School Education to intervene immediately to address these staffing shortages and improve infrastructure, asserting that quality education is a fundamental right for all students regardless of their location.
