Kohima: The Department of Power in Kohima kicked off a wide-reaching disconnection campaign this week. They are hunting for non-paying customers and illegal power users across the city. The push hits government offices, rural villages, and urban households alike. Officials want the cash now. Anyone behind on payments needs to settle up immediately to keep their lights on.
Executive Engineer Er Shiludi Lkr confirmed the crackdown targets anyone skipping out on bills or running unauthorized lines. The department specifically warned residents against hooking into power lines or messing with meters. These acts break the Indian Electricity Act of 2003. Violators face stiff fines or jail time. The department noted that "such activities constitute serious offences and are punishable under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, with penalties that may include fines, imprisonment or both."
Frequent transformer failures plague the local network. The department blames heavy, unregulated usage for the constant breakdowns. They urge residents to swap for smart meters to stop the damage. Consumers with billing errors should visit their local Sub-Divisional Officer to fix the numbers. For everyone else, the department suggests using the online portal to pay bills and handle recharges.
