Shillong: A judicial committee is pushing back against the state government. Justice (retd) B.P. Katakey, acting for the Meghalaya High Court, flagged the sudden transfer of the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police. The officer was moved out just four months after taking the post following a deadly February 5, 2026, illegal coal mining accident at Mynsyngat-Thangsko.
The 39th interim report filed before the High Court questions why the transfer happened so quickly. The committee noted the SP took pro-active steps to curb illegal coal mining. They want the High Court to examine the reasoning behind the move.
This follows an April 10, 2026, report where the committee praised the district's work against mining violations. The committee remains in place to monitor state enforcement following a suo motu PIL. Investigators praised the officer's work, stating he had taken “pro-active steps” to curb illegal coal mining.
