Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP is pushing the central government to fix the struggles facing small-scale coal miners. State general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna confirmed the party is actively communicating with the Union Coal Ministry to find solutions. Pressure on the industry remains high.
Pohshna noted the party received formal complaints from various local groups, including the Jaintia National Council. The BJP claims it is committed to helping these workers survive. "We have also received representation from various organisations who are working in the areas," Pohshna said.
State BJP officials traveled to Delhi recently to lobby the Union Coal Minister in person. That meeting never happened. The Minister had prior commitments that forced a cancellation. Despite the scheduling miss, the party insists it is not finished. They plan to keep the pressure on the Centre as part of their strategy within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
