Meghalaya High Court Sets August 31 Deadline for Illegal Coal Mining Reports

Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya set August 31 to examine how the state government followed recommendations from the Justice (Retd) BP Katakey Committee. The court targets the committee's 38th and 39th interim reports on illegal coal mining. Delays previously stalled the case.

The state government submitted a status report on July 6 to address the 38th report. Officials followed up on Monday with a brief submission regarding the 39th report, which carries a date of July 3. The Advocate General, assisted by Government Advocate R Colney, updated the bench on these responses.

The Advocate General asked the court for more time. He requested permission to file a "more comprehensive report regarding the 39th interim report" before the next hearing date. The court agreed to the timeline. Judges ordered both interim reports and their associated status documents to be grouped for the August 31 session, promising appropriate orders once the review concludes.
