Guwahati: A toxic weed is choking Kaliabor. Parthenium is jumping from roadside patches into residential gardens and vital farm fields. Its unchecked expansion threatens the region’s biodiversity and local food production.
The plant causes severe allergic respiratory reactions and painful skin inflammation in humans. Livestock face equal danger. Farmers now struggle to contain the growth as the weed invades agricultural plots with alarming speed.
Professor and researcher Chiranjeev Bezbaruah warned locals against using Mahabhringharaj plants to fight the infestation. He said, "people to exercise caution while using Mahabhringharaj plants as a method for controlling or eliminating Parthenium." Authorities are calling for greater public awareness to handle the spread safely.
