Shillong: India bowling coach Morne Morkel expects Rohit Sharma to bounce back at Lord's this Sunday. The veteran opener faces pressure after a quiet start to the three-match ODI series against England. The series is locked at 1-1. Both teams want the trophy.
Morkel brushed off concerns regarding the batsman's recent slump. He pointed to tricky conditions in England where the swinging ball has made life difficult for top-order players. "As I said earlier, it is hard work with a new ball up front. We've seen throughout the series that the ball is moving around. So batting up front is not easy. No doubt Rohit will work it out," Morkel told reporters on Saturday.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia shut down rumors about Rohit's potential retirement on Friday. He confirmed that the veteran remains a vital part of India's squad. There is no talk of him leaving the format. Rohit has racked up over 11,700 ODI runs throughout his career.
The opener played a major role during the 2023 ODI World Cup run and steered the team to a 2025 Champions Trophy win. Shubman Gill now holds the ODI captaincy, but Morkel insists Rohit provides a steadying influence. The team prepares for the series finale, looking to rely on his deep well of experience.
