Shillong: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee blasted the state government today over a decision to freeze permanent hiring. All new teacher appointments for the next two years must now happen on a contractual basis through the State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya. This shift stems from an August 19 Education Department notification.
The order mandates that no new staff will join under the deficit or government school categories for 24 months. Hiring now depends entirely on the availability of funds. Manuel Badwar, general secretary of the MPCC, warned the move threatens administrative stability and teaching standards. He noted the policy clashes with earlier promises made by the Chief Minister regarding education reform. "The shift could undermine administrative functioning and teaching standards," Badwar said.
Officials fear the temporary nature of these jobs will drive away top talent. Pay scales remain a major point of contention. Badwar argues the state brings in roughly Rs 1,800 crore each year from various Central and State education schemes. He wants the government to scrap the plan and commit to permanent recruitment to fix the system.
