IMD Issues Heavy Rain and Flood Alert for Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: The India Meteorological Department warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms hitting Arunachal Pradesh starting Sunday, August 2. Residents in vulnerable spots need to stay alert. Papum Pare district faces the worst, with forecasts predicting very heavy rainfall between 12 and 20 cm over a single day. Other areas including West Kameng, Lepa Rada, East Siang, and Lohit expect heavy rain ranging from 6 to 11 cm.

Officials issued a yellow alert for Papum Pare, Lower Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, Lohit, and Anjaw. These areas face lightning risks and heavy downpours. Conditions should improve by Monday, though Anjaw, Papum Pare, Lower Siang, and Lepa Rada will likely keep seeing storms. Weather should stabilize for most of the state by Tuesday, leaving only scattered warnings in place.

By Wednesday, the rain eases to isolated spots. Thursday brings lingering yellow alerts for Anjaw, Changlang, Lohit, Lower Dibang Valley, Lower Siang, and Papum Pare. Meteorologists warn that the wet weather could trigger flash floods, waterlogging, and travel snarls. The weather department has advised people living in landslide- and flood-prone areas to exercise caution.

This storm season has already been brutal. Monsoon floods and landslides have killed seven people so far. The state reports 1,55,763 residents hit by the disaster. The storms have ravaged 665 villages across 28 districts, destroying public utilities, crops, and local infrastructure.
