Itanagar: The India Meteorological Department expects more trouble. Thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain will batter Arunachal Pradesh for the next two days. Itanagar forecasters flagged East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, and Longding for heavy rainfall of 6 cm to 11 cm on Thursday and Friday. Things look worse in Papum Pare.
Authorities placed Papum Pare under a higher alert for very heavy rainfall between 12 cm and 20 cm. That downpour continues through Saturday. Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley will also see thunderstorms and heavy rain into the weekend. Officials warn of flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage.
The state is already reeling from a brutal monsoon season. Official figures confirm seven deaths and 29 injuries. Floods have hit 1,49,392 people across all 27 districts. The disaster spans 343 administrative circles and 594 villages. Public infrastructure is in ruins. The state lost 198 roads, 38 bridges, 30 culverts, and 63 government buildings. Power grids took a massive hit, with 156 lines and 239 poles destroyed. Schools and water supply schemes are offline.
Agricultural losses are mounting. The monsoon wiped out 733.66 hectares of crops, including 419 hectares of horticulture plantations. Another 1,010 hectares of forest land suffered damage. The weather department issued a blunt advisory: "The disaster has also affected agriculture, with 733.66 hectares of crop area—including 419 hectares of horticulture plantations and 314.66 hectares of agricultural land—reported damaged." Residents and commuters must stay alert until the clouds clear.
