Itanagar: The International Human Rights Organization wants the Central government to name the Arunachal Pradesh floods a national disaster. They demand an immediate 5,000 crore rupee relief package. State conditions are dire.
Advocate Kenbom Bagra serves as the Zonal Director for the group. He told reporters, "We demand that the Centre immediately declare the floods and disaster in Arunachal Pradesh a national disaster and sanction a special package of Rs 5,000 crore for the flood-ravaged state."
Citizens lack food, shelter, clean water, and medical care. Many residents claim the damage exceeds the scale of the 1950 earthquake. At least three cloudbursts sparked the flash floods. Water levels have dropped, but thousands remain in the wreckage.
Data from the State Emergency Operation Centre confirms over one lakh people currently face disaster impacts. The toll stands at 12 deaths and 29 injuries. Hardest hit districts include Keyi Panyor, Lower Siang, Leparada, East Siang, Upper Siang, Lower Dibang, Kurung Kumey, Pakke Kessang, Kamle, Siang, Kra Daadi, Tirap, Changlang, and East Kameng.
Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Kiren Rijiju previously toured the state under orders from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An eight-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team also conducted a damage assessment on the ground.
