Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on August 17. He labeled the former Union Home Minister a pure Naxal. The sharp jab follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's August 15 Independence Day speech at the Red Fort. Modi warned that while armed Naxalism has faded, a dangerous breed of dimagi Naxals persists in influential policy circles.
Chidambaram fired back on social media on August 16. He openly embraced the label, stating, "I am proud to be a dimagi naxal!" Sarma seized on this response during an August 17 press conference. He demanded a formal inquiry into Chidambaram’s past performance as Home Minister. Sarma wants to know if the veteran politician sabotaged efforts to combat Left Wing Extremism while in office.
Sarma alleges the Congress party actively seeks anarchy to regain power by 2029. He claims the opposition party cannot handle the stability fostered by Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Sarma insists the public must isolate those with Maoist mindsets who once held sway over government committees.

Sarma didn't stop at Chidambaram. He trained his sights on Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, accusing the pair of running a mission to oppose the nation. He claimed the mother and son are pushing anti-national activities, specifically citing their alleged attempt to stop the full rendition of Vande Mataram during recent Independence Day events.
The Chief Minister argued that these actions, along with their supposed efforts to instigate street protests under the guise of supporting Gen Z, prove the Congress is bent on creating chaos. He warned that the conduct of the Gandhi duo provides a preview of what the country would look like if the party managed to claw its way back into power.

The political brawl expanded on August 17 as AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh swiped at the Prime Minister over the dimagi Naxal tag. Speaking in Sivasagar, Assam, Singh claimed the label is actually a weapon used against young people who demand answers on joblessness, rigged recruitment exams, and the decay of state schools.
Singh turned the accusation on its head, labeling BJP members the real dimagi Naxals. He alleged that ruling party officials are the ones fueling division and hatred across the nation. According to the AAP leader, dismissing student protesters as extremists is a tactic to dodge accountability for the closure of one lakh government schools.
