Shillong: Senora Johny Arengh is back at work. The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council reinstated the former president of the Non-Gazetted Employees’ Association as a Lower Division Assistant in the taxation department. He returned following a direct order from the High Court of Meghalaya.
The council fired Arengh for leading protests over unpaid employee wages. He fought back. He filed a writ petition against the termination, and on October 17, 2024, the High Court ruled in his favor. Despite this, the GHADC sat on the decision for nearly two years.
The Executive Committee finally issued an official order on July 28 to bring him back immediately. The council says they will eventually pay his owed wages. The GHADC stated that "financial benefits from the date of termination until his reinstatement, including arrears from the suspension period, will be released as and when funds become available."
