Imphal: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh exposed widespread illegal poppy farming destroying forest land in the Kangpokpi district. He shared video evidence showing about 500 acres of illicit plantations circling Koubru Peak. These sites sit within the KK Reserve Forest, the proposed Koubru Forest, and the Leimakhong-Irang Protected Forest.
The scale is immense. Singh compared satellite imagery of Baleijang taken in 2023 with current 2026 footage to highlight the rapid environmental collapse. New poppy plots continue to swallow protected woodlands. He warned that this unchecked clearing threatens the state's future environment.
Singh is now demanding federal action. He publicly urged the Narcotics Control Bureau and the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to step in. He stated, "forest reserves were being damaged as new poppy cultivation sites emerged." Authorities must act fast to halt the destruction.
