Agartala: Tension hit Champaknagar on Friday as former ATTF and NLFT insurgents launched a fresh protest. They blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway and the rail line at Brigudas. Traffic stopped dead. Commuters are now stuck in long lines as rail services face immediate shutdowns.
These men surrendered years ago, yet they say the Central and State Governments broke their promises. Their seven-point charter demands better rehabilitation, financial aid, and welfare benefits. The protesters argue that past appeals to the administration failed. They feel ignored.
Protest leaders have drawn a hard line. They refuse to accept empty promises from bureaucrats this time. They want direct action. One leader stated, "Protest leaders insisted they would not withdraw based on administrative assurances alone."
They demand the Chief Minister and the Director of the Tribal Welfare Department show up at the site to make firm commitments. Until that happens, the blockades stay put. Authorities are watching the sites closely while trying to talk the protesters off the tracks and road. No movement has been cleared yet.
