Agartala: Tripura police detained two people Tuesday for questioning regarding the shooting of a Tipra Motha candidate in Gamaria. The attack occurred during the Tripura Village Committee elections, sparking fury from party leadership. Protesters shut down the Udaipur-Amarpur road at 9:45 am to demand arrests.

The blockade ended after Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather and Inspector General of Police Ipper Manchak met with party brass. Tensions boiled over during the talks. A shouting match erupted between officials and party members, leading to a brief scuffle. MLA Ranjit Debbarma led the protest, accusing police of dragging their feet.

Debbarma noted that an earlier 48-hour deadline for arrests had passed without success. He confirmed the new status of the investigation. "Police informed us that two people had been detained in connection with the firing, but the main accused, who has already been identified, is still at large," Debbarma said.

The party granted authorities 72 more hours to find the primary suspect. They warned of statewide protests if that deadline slips. IG Manchak confirmed two cases are currently active. "Two cases have been registered and investigation is being carried out in both the cases. The investigation shall proceed in its due course," he stated.

Udaipur SDPO Debanjali Roy said the situation is under control. Despite this, officials imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to stop further unrest. Even with those orders, a crowd of MLAs and MDCs remained at the site.
