Experts Push Transformation Over Suppression to Fight Drug Addiction

Kohima: Drug addiction starts in the mind. Experts gathered in Mokokchung on June 30 to mark World No Drug Day, arguing that long-term psychological change beats simple suppression. The Rajyoga Education and Research Foundation and 12 Assam Rifles hosted the event, focusing on value-based living to fight substance abuse.

Dr. Swapan Gupta, a neurologist from New Delhi, told the crowd that addiction warps the brain reward system. It clouds judgment and ruins health. He noted that North-East states consistently see higher usage rates than the rest of the country. Adolescents remain the most vulnerable group. He stated, "The key is not suppression but transformation."

Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma joined the call for action. He said police and enforcement agencies cannot fix the problem alone. The district recently launched a youth counseling facility to help those struggling with mental health or drug issues. However, the town still lacks a state-funded rehab center.

Verma urged schools, churches, and parents to step up. He wants more focus on the emotional health of local children. Lt Col Surender Singh of the 12 Assam Rifles warned youth that drugs offer no escape from life's hurdles. The event finished with a rally from the Assam Rifles Ground to the town center. Participants marched to send a clear message: choose life, not drugs.
