Kohima: Former Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. S.C. Jamir wants pensioners to lead a cleanup of the state. He spoke Friday at the KABA Jubilee Memorial Centre during the 4th general meeting of the Kohima Aor Pensioner Telungjem. He told the crowd that the group must use their wisdom to fight corruption in administration, development, and elections.
Dr. Jamir, who also served as Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha, traced the history of the Ao people. He noted they were the first in Nagaland to embrace education and Christianity through the American Baptist Mission. He spoke about the chaos after World War II, noting how Dr. Imkongliba united the Naga People’s Convention. The veterans helped build the state. Today, the state faces deep problems.
He pointed to tribalism, fractionalism, and insurgency as major roadblocks. He argued that these issues have left Nagaland tagged as one of the worst states in the nation. He urged those in attendance to share their knowledge via churches and social platforms to spark a change. Retired IAS officer E.T. Sunep also spoke to the union. He told the members to live with virtue. "Pensioners were people who had gained knowledge through years of experience and encounters," Sunep stated.
The event included a minute of silence for deceased pensioners led by Vice President L. Chubalepzuk. President Dr. L. Temsu Jamir offered the welcome address, while Secretary N. Wati Atsongchanger closed the meeting with a vote of thanks.
