Delhi Manipuri Academic Fraternity Warns Against Trial by Media in JNU Harassment Case

Imphal: The Delhi Manipuri Academic Fraternity (DMAF) is demanding an immediate halt to public commentary surrounding a sexual harassment case at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is currently probing the allegations. DMAF issued a formal statement on September 20 to address the situation.

The group claims the matter is currently subjected to a "trial by electronic and social media." Selective reporting and baseless speculation are poisoning the process. These actions threaten the privacy and rights of everyone involved. They violate confidentiality standards set by Section 16 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act of 2013. The same protections appear in Section 8(8) of the 2015 UGC Regulations.

Unchecked leaks have spread through WhatsApp, print outlets, and various social media platforms. DMAF secretary Prof. Shanta Laishram says the group is not taking sides on the merits of the case. They want the ICC to handle the evidence independently. Public interference undermines the credibility of the inquiry. The fraternity wants the university to finish its work without prejudice. They insist that only facts and due process should determine the final outcome.
