Imphal: NEET aspirants swarmed Keishampat Road in Imphal on July 23 to protest alleged examination paper leaks. Students demanded accountability and sweeping reforms for an exam system serving over 24 lakh competitors. Protesters rallied for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who recently concluded a 26-day hunger strike in Gurugram after receiving government assurances.
Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party president Conrad K. Sangma arrived in Imphal on July 24. His agenda spans two days. He inaugurated a new NPP Manipur State Office at Mercy Lane, Mantripukhri. He aims to bolster the party infrastructure.
Sangma addressed the national NEET scandal at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. He demanded a transparent inquiry but warned against premature blame. "We are demanding an inquiry, and we demand action against whoever is responsible. But we cannot simply blame somebody without a proper inquiry," Sangma said. He noted the state handled student demonstrators poorly, suggesting the situation required a more measured touch.
The NPP leader confirmed that his party will contest the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections independently. He rejected pre-poll pacts, citing the need to protect the organization's unique identity. "We have always stressed that, while we are in governments and we support different governments and in coalition for government formation, but when it comes to elections, the National People's Party has always maintained that we will fight elections on our identity and on our principles," Sangma stated.
Sangma met with MLAs, party leaders, and frontal organizations to solidify the party roadmap. He is scheduled to attend the NPP Manipur State Unit Annual Convention at the MSFDS complex on Saturday. This session includes inducting new members and vetting district executive committees.
