Imphal: The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation, known as AMUCO, is taking to the streets. They launch a series of democratic agitations starting October 24. The goal is simple: stop any move to disintegrate the territorial integrity of Manipur. AMUCO President Sorokhaibam Sanjoy announced the plan at a press conference on October 23. He accused the Indian government of trying to undermine the state.

Sanjoy reminded the public that Manipur existed as a princely state before 1947. He argued against creating new autonomous district councils based on community lines. The group is suspicious of a meeting held Wednesday at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Mantripukhri. That meeting involved former Intelligence Bureau Special Director AK Mishra, retired Lieutenant General and Rajya Sabha member RP Kalita, and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. Sanjoy demands answers.

“Conducting a meeting among those central officials and the chief minister at this juncture, without informing the public about its purpose, is very unfortunate,” Sanjoy said. He claims the government acts against the public will despite the democratic label. Backing AMUCO are groups including the All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, the Committee on Human Rights, and the Manipuri Students’ Federation. These claims regarding the government’s secret agendas remain unverified.
