Kohima: Ten youth from Chendang village traveled to Assam and Nagaland for a two-day workshop on farming. They focused on mushroom cultivation, spawn production, and composting. The trip aimed to curb local migration by boosting rural job opportunities. SBI Youth for India Fellow Abhayjeet Gupta organized the event alongside the Eleutheros Christian Society.
The group started in Guwahati on September 15. They attended a full-day training at the Skill Satellite Centre within the Guwahati Biotech Park. Senior Scientist Dr. Bula Choudhury led the sessions. The group studied spawn culture, equipment use, and nutritional profiling. They spent the day working in the laboratory to learn oyster and button mushroom techniques.
The training moved to the Life Ministry Learning Centre in Naga United Village, Chümoukedima, on September 16. Alemla Samuel taught the team about vermicomposting under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency. The group intends to turn spent mushroom substrate into usable compost. This adds another income stream for the village.
Bashang Mongba, President of the Chendang Students Union, praised the trip. He noted the value of seeing the work firsthand. "We have learnt a lot of things during this visit. The practical, hands-on experience has made this much easier for us. We are looking forward to using it to generate livelihood," Mongba said.
